The Presidential Park is a huge space with an area of 332 thousand m2, on which the White House, Ellipse Park, Lafayette Square and the visitor center are located.
It was planned to create a park around the White House at the end of the XVIII century, but the project began to be implemented only in the middle of the XIX century. Before that, the area around the presidential residence was used for a variety of purposes.
At various times, the site of Lafayette Square housed: a racetrack, a slave market, a cemetery, a zoo and a military camp. Now Lafayette Square in Washington is used for celebrations, disgruntled Americans come here to strike, and tourists take pictures against the background of the White House.
Ellipse Park served as a parking place for troops during the Civil War, and today the main Christmas tree of the country is being installed here, and tourists come to look at the "Zero Kilometer".
