Plaza de España in Barcelona covers an area of 34,000 m2, making it the largest area in the city and the second largest in Spain. It was built in the form that we can see today, for the 1929 World's Fair, designed by Guillem Busquets and Josep Puy Kadafalsh. In order to clear a place for construction, several historical buildings were demolished, and in their place Venetian towers with a height of 42 meters rose, which became symbolic gates to the EXPO pavilions. Today, passing between the towers, visitors to the city get to Queen Maria Cristina Street, known as the venue for numerous fairs and exhibitions.
The second attraction of the square is the fountain created by Antonio Gaudi's colleague Josep Maria Huhol. The fountain is decorated with sculptures by Michele Bligh, symbolizing heroism, faith, trade and prosperity.
Plaza de Espana in Barcelona is surrounded by buildings of historical value. For example, there is a former bullfighting arena, which now houses a shopping center.
