The Arc de Triomphe in Barcelona was not built to welcome Spanish troops returning home after another campaign. It was built specifically for the 1888 World's Fair as the main entrance to the territory of the EXPO.
The arch was designed by Josepe Vilaseke, who created a truly monumental 30-meter structure that amazed visitors to the city in the century before last and continues to greet tourists today. However, if earlier guests passed through the arch to the exhibition halls, now the Triumphal Arch serves as the entrance to the Citadel Park.
The arch is built of red brick in neo-Moorish style and decorated with several sculptures. On the side of Pasech de San Joan Boulevard, the frieze of the arch is decorated with the composition "Barcelona welcomes the nation", on the opposite side – "Reward". The sides of the arch are decorated with works entitled "Allegories of Agriculture and Industry" and "Trade and Art".
