The United States Botanic Garden in Washington is one of the largest in the world and the most visited botanical garden in the United States (up to 750 thousand people per year). The first attempts to create a Botanical garden in Washington were made in 1816, but it opened only in 1820, and the formal opening date is considered to be 1850.
In the process of forming the garden, a large-scale campaign was launched to collect seeds and seedlings, as a result of which plants arrived in the United States from all over the world. Already in 1824, 458 plants were growing in the Botanical Garden. Today, there is a collection of 60,000 plants, many of which are over 150 years old. The garden occupies 8 thousand m2, there are 34 greenhouses, 16 thematic and climatic zones.
