A trip to Rupit and Besala: immersion in the Middle Ages
Treat yourself to a unique journey into the past by visiting two ancient towns of Catalonia — Rupit and Besala. These places have surprisingly preserved the atmosphere of the medieval era, becoming symbols of the secluded beauty of the Catalan countryside.
Rupit: a picturesque corner among volcanic rocks
The town of Rupit is located at an altitude of 890 meters, in the heart of the La Garrotcha Volcanic Reserve. Its narrow streets paved with stone and a wooden suspension bridge connecting the two parts of the village seem to take you back in time. Every stone here breathes history: from the traces of the Roman Empire to the events of the Inquisition. Rupit is famous not only for its views, but also for its traditional Catalan cuisine. After a walk around the city, you can enjoy local cheeses, cured meats and a glass of wine.
Besalu: open-air museum
Besalu, nicknamed the pearl of medieval architecture, is rightfully considered one of the most picturesque corners of Catalonia. Its main symbol is the stone bridge over the Fluvia River, built in the XI-XII centuries, which serves as the entrance to the city. The streets of Besalu preserve the spirit of the Romanesque era: churches, monasteries and the Jewish quarter of Kall with the ruins of a synagogue and ritual baths tell a rich story.
Local festivals deserve special attention. In early September, a medieval festival is held here with jousting tournaments and folk festivals. This is the perfect chance to see the revived traditions.
La Garrotcha Nature Park: the beauty of volcanoes
The La Garrotcha Volcanic Reserve stretches between the two cities. Once active volcanoes today have left behind majestic basalt landscapes and dense beech forests. A walk through the valley allows you to enjoy the harmony of nature and inspiring silence.
