Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets, London E1, United Kingdom
The Whitechapel area in London became world famous more than a hundred years ago, after a series of horrific murders attributed to the mystical Jack the Ripper took place here. At that time, the quarter consisted entirely of slums, in which the poorest people of London settled, and many women were forced into prostitution because of poverty and often became victims.
Even today, the Whitechapel quarter cannot be called prosperous, but still it is not as dangerous as the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Poor immigrants and refugees from Asian countries, such as Bangladesh, mainly live here.
The area is considered to be the center of London's alternative culture. Those who do not want to put up with generally accepted norms and want to live freely settle here, which is not at all to the liking of the local police, who regularly check the pockets of the inhabitants of Whitechapel for drugs and weapons.
