An unforgettable trip to the Montserrat Monastery: nature, legends and spiritual heritage
Immerse yourself in the wonderful world of the Montserrat mountain range, where history and nature have merged together. Just 50 km from Barcelona, majestic cliffs, a unique monastery and breathtaking panoramas await you.
The Montserrat Massif is a national park known for its unusual rock formations. The height of the mountains here reaches 1,256 meters (Sant Jeroni peak), and the bizarre shapes resembling figures of people and animals have been named: "God's Finger", "Elephant's Trunk", "Mummy". Thanks to these natural features, the mountain got its name — "sawn".
The famous Benedictine monastery of Montserrat, founded in 1025, is located at an altitude of 725 meters. Over the centuries, it was destroyed many times, but by the 20th century it was restored and became a symbol of Catalonia.
The main sights of the monastery
The Statue of the Black Madonna
The legendary figure of the Virgin Mary, made of dark poplar, is kept in the chapel of the monastery. She is considered the patroness of Catalonia, and her touch brings fulfillment of desires. Catalans affectionately call her "La Moreneta" ("darkie").
Escolania de Montserrat Boys Choir
The oldest choir in Europe, the first mention of which dates back to 1223. Hymns in honor of the Virgin Mary are sung daily under the arches of the monastery.
Montserrat Museum
The collection includes works by El Greco, Dali, Picasso, Caravaggio and other masters, as well as exhibits from the era of Ancient Egypt and early Christianity.
